Project Description
The Hmong ethnic group is one of the 54 brotherly ethnic groups in Vietnam, specifically in Dong Van District of Ha Giang province. In today’s society, as cultural values are highly regarded, the Hmong people have more opportunities and potential for development. However, they do not have a center or architecture that strongly marks and affirms their cultural value. Therefore, the Hmong cultural center is established with the aim of creating a foundation for development and bringing benefits to the Hmong community.
With three main goals of preserving the original culture, continuing traditional values, and integrating new values, the Hmong Dong Van Cultural Center consists of three main function blocks representing these three spirits. The central block consists of the three largest blocks developed from indigenous house architecture, maintaining the main axes in space and developing additional functions, representing the continuity and reverence for traditional values. The traditional craft block consists of smaller blocks proportionate to indigenous houses, aiming for refinement, preservation, and reverence for the beautiful proportions in traditional architecture and space. Finally, the large connection block and performance block represent the new, integrating architectural values and spaces rich in contemporary values but based on the characteristics of cultural life of the people.
All interior spaces draw materials from all the cultural values of the ethnic group that formed them. Particularly in architectural ideas, the initial concept of the project not only solves the problem of lack of light and ventilation for the building but also carries the spiritual value of openness, embracing the new in a way that is appropriate for strong and sustainable development in the future.
