Project Description

The project delves into the profound question: “How can gender equality becomes a reality in a community long dominated by the gender bias of “valuing men over women?” Recognizing that the most practical solution begins with the women themselves, the project focuses on spaces dedicated to cultural activities and the development of hemp weaving. The center provides opportunities for women to harness their existing skills and potential in hemp weaving, thereby achieving economic autonomy, gaining societal recognition, and ultimately fostering a resilient women’s community. The entire project is rooted in the study of the beauty of Hmong women’s craftsmanship, which is then thoughtfully translated into architectural form. This translation captures the beauty and rhythm of weaving and embroidering, from the up-and-down motions to the unique “negative” stitches. Furthermore, the building is designed to operate in harmony with the natural rhythms and activities of the local people. As the seasons change throughout the year (during the hemp season) and the tides shift throughout the day, the activities and experiences within the building will vary, creating a dynamic and enriching environment.
