Project Description

Project Description: On December 12, 1954, 198 political prisoners executed the most organized escape in Con Dao Prison’s history. When everything was ready — the boat assembled, the tunnel opened, the people divided into groups — the escape began. Ben Dam Memorial Museum in Con Dao is envisioned as a journey through memory, retracing the poignant story of political prisoners once confined in this so-called “hell on earth.” From the darkness of imprisonment, through the harsh years of forced labor, to the daring yet perilous attempts at escape, the architecture embodies a continuous flow of history and human resilience. The sound of waves and wind, and somewhere the echo of footsteps, hammers, and shouts from the escape still resonate within the chest. At the journey’s end, the names of successful prison breaks are engraved into the concrete floor, eternal marks of courage. No fences, no walls remain—only the vast expanse between sky and sea, where freedom and hope merge into one.
