Project Description
Islamic art has an aim, and this type of art aims to move and connect people from this world with the spiritual world or with god. And the idea of moving and transcending from different worlds can be reflected on more than one level, how the project is connected with its context, the connection of the project with parks, and the connection between the old and the new buildings which are added, and the connection between ground and underground, all of those contrasts will make the people feel like they are moving between different worlds.
The project has a multifunctional zoning plan, and this diversity of the functions is very useful since the buildings inside the site abound so bringing different functions means bringing people from different backgrounds together, and this will serve the project by making it more lively, and it will also serve the community by bringing people together.
The project is well connected to its context and surroundings (Environmentally: by respecting nature and the environment, culturally: the project looks like it’s a part of the city in terms of material and architectural style) especially because it is next to a historical district which is Taajeel and it is a part of Erbil’s Buffer Zone for historical sites by UNESCO, and most of the buildings inside this zone have specific regulations and one of them is using brick material for the elevations, which is the brown and yellow brick is used commonly here in Erbil.
And this project will create an urban space which is not enclosed by walls, by this way the project will invite and welcome the people to enter and explore the different functions inside, and when they go around they will see different types of knowledge (The theoretical knowledge which is taught in Islamic Madrasa, and the practical knowledge which is taught in the art academy).
The project also contains dormitories it will be used by the students who come from other places to be a student there, and it will make the place more active because they will live there.
The mosque is the focal point of the project, it is covered with yellow brick the authentic style and the design of the mosque will be kept as it is, and there will be brown brick skin with a traditional brick pattern will be used to cover the mosque and in some places, there will be openings to show the material and the style of the mosque, this skin will cover most of the parts of the project and it will unify the style and the material for the project, this skin will also create a spiritual effect on the interior of the mosque and the other building without touching the interior.
Around the mosque there are plazas, those plazas were added to the mosque to make the Islamic madrasa which is in the basement lighter, and also to create visual access to the other side of the mosque plazas on all sides.
The green path in the art gallery part has a direct connection because the art gallery is directly open to the path and the people who are walking on that green path can directly see the artworks and this will encourage them to go and look at them.
