Project Description
The argument of the study is that the entire urban area collects memories over time and gradually turns into a place of memory, which should be a primary subject of conservation studies, as it embodies values attributed to it by society.
The project is based on reviving collective memory as a constructive nucleus that respects the values embedded in the place rather than erasing or neglecting them. This is achieved through the rehabilitation of the historical urban fabric by identifying and classifying its urban accumulations across the site within a spatial journey unfolding between blocks, streets, and alleys. These readings are derived from the layered fabric accumulated across different historical periods (1800–1900–2000).
A contemporary architectural slab (2025) is introduced as a natural continuation of urban heritage, viewed through a contemporary lens. This intervention extrapolates the past and merges it with a modern fabric of representation and connection, forming an integrated dialogue between historical Cairo and contemporary architectural expression.
The project is built for the local community within a framework that respects the surrounding fabric while incorporating contemporary elements. It embraces the urban heritage of Historic Cairo by combining cultural, educational, and scientific programs into a vibrant urban fabric that reflects community values and reinforces the spirit of place.
