Project Description

The redevelopment of Maitham Al-Tamar Street, taking into account the organization of the main roads leading to the site, which are directly linked to it. is located in the city center . This street is vital, as it is considered one of the commercial streets
challenge
The major challenge in the project, Maitham Al-Tamar Street, is that part of it is located in the old area of Karbala, which is prohibited from entering cars, and the second part is located in a newly created area, almost randomly.
Problem
1_Land uses: Randomness in land uses and imbalance in land uses, the largest proportion of which is for car parks.
2_ Movement: Crowds and high traffic momentum due to the intersection between car traffic and pedestrian traffic
3_ Environment: Increased temperatures and air pollution due to heavy traffic and car exhausts
4_ Urban landscape: Pollution of the urban landscape and visual distortion
The Solutions
1_land use
Redistribution and organization of land uses.
The permanent residential part, represented by houses, was removed from the site because the site is commercial and commercial activities increased
As for the car parks, there are three multi-story car parks spread across the site at the level of six floors, as well as two car parks under the ground on each side of the road, the entrances of which are from the secondary streets.
And since the Maytham Al-Tamar area does not contain any green parks, the deficiency was compensated for by providing green areas above the parking lots that contain elevators for easy access.
2_movement
A pedestrian network has been provided that extends along the main street and connects the fabric of the area and the buildings to several levels on the first and second floors.
The means of vertical movement in the pedestrian network are varied, including moving stairs, elevators, regular stairs, and ramps, which are the quickest and easiest way to move people.
3_environment
The percentage of green areas was increased from 2% to 10%. Green areas and water fountains were provided inside the buildings in the central courtyard.
4_The urban landscape
Urban street facades were designed to suit the identity of the city and use of local elements and materials,. Gates were defined for the entrances to the old city, and gates were designed inspired by elements of local environment.
