Project Description

Jadid Hassan Pasha is considered one of the ancient areas of Baghdad that lived with a large elite of intellectuals, writers, poets and seasoned politicians, and it was once the Lady of Baghdad. This locality is located in the old Rusafa center. I will present the problems and suffering of this region and how these problems were solved in my design:

  • The problem of communication, connectivity and accessibility:

These problems were solved by:

  • (Connecting from Al-Mutanabi Street) Since Al-Mutanabi Street is known as a cultural street and is home to the largest libraries in Iraq, this connection will help to activate the cultural aspect and draw more people to the area.
  • (Connecting from Al-Rasheed Street) Since Al-Rasheed Street is known as one of the oldest streets in Baghdad and is currently suffering from severe neglect and ineffectiveness during evening times, this connection will help to restore life to the street and achieve accessibility from the street to the area .
  • (Connecting from Al-Qishla) Since Al-Qishla is known as a heritage place, This connection is great importance in attracting visitors from Al-Qishla Street and the Saray Market, and the arrival of this link to the heart of the locality will lead to the revival of the heart of this area .

Therefore, these design decisions will lead to transforming the locality into a humanitarian   urban area that includes cultural, commercial, recreational and heritage activities.

  • The isolation of the river front, which causes:
  • Isolate functional communication with the rest of the project.
  • Depriving the region of the benefits of river transport.

These problems were solved by:

  • Reviving the river bank and creating new investment entertainment spaces along it will lead to strengthening the link between the axis of Al-Rasheed Street and the axis of the river bank through alleys and paths that have been rehabilitated.
  • Establishment of a river taxi station on the river bank.
  • Exacerbation of the problem of the presence of warehouses and industrial premises, which cause:
  • Permanent traffic jams and chaos between pedestrians and cars.
  • Changing the uses of the land and converting some lands into warehouses, wholesale shops and services.
  • Changing the use of the land by converting it from residential houses to warehouses and printing presses.
  • Changing the structure of the markets and transforming them from folkloric craft markets to industrial markets.
  • Use sidewalks for storage and streets for transport and loading.

These problems were solved by:

  • Encouraging the return of various heritage events to take their place in the city center.
  • Investing the upper floors that are used as warehouses with new activities within the uses of the region.
  • Organizing stalls and creating temporary paths for them to regulate pedestrian movement .
  • The deterioration of the infrastructure that causes:
  • Weak and outdated services.
  • Frequency of fires and losses.
  • Reduce investment.

These problems were solved by:

  • Renovating the infrastructure and providing the region with modern services based on renewable energy and recycling methods to ensure sustainability, preserve the environment and increase investment attractiveness.
